ABOUTI had the desire a long time ago to create a web site dedicated on this special event. Firstly, because there is not such a place, although there are seperated links and sites around the web. Secondly, because it fits on the contents of the DigiChess site. Enjoy the history ! Best Regards,Marountas John Headman of the DigiChess team. |

Origins of the Computer OlympiadFather of this event was David Levy. He had the idea and the will to organize the first event at the Park Lane Hotel in London in 1989. It was the same year that David Levy lost to Deep Thought ( which had won the world computer championship in Canada, with a rating of 2600.DEEP THOUGHT also defeated Grandmaster Robert Byrne in a match game ). The excitement on the game programming was grown fast, so did the popularity of the Computer Olympiad. London was the place that took place the 1990 (2nd) and 1992 (4rth) Olympiads. Then came Maastricht with 1991 (3rd) Olympiad. The 2000 Olympiad (5th) was hold at Alexandra Palace, the West Hall and 2001 event (6th) took place at Maastricht . So we come to the present with a "rich" 7th Olympiad at Maastricht. |
